10% of the Year 7 intake is selected by music aptitude and selection takes place through an in-person Music Aptitude test.

The test lasts between 40 – 60 minutes.
It is a progressive audio test with four sections focusing on Rhythm, Pitch, Harmony and Melody.

Students are provided with a pencil and multiple choice answer sheet, there is no written or practical element to the test.

A student will certainly benefit from having a musical background but it is not essential.
Once all tests are complete, they are marked and we then supply a ranked order from the highest to lowest scores to the Local Authority for those students who then apply for a place at Moulsham High School.

The Music Aptitude Test takes place after the September Open Evening and results are posted before the deadline day for handing in forms to Essex County Council Admissions in October.

The music test for Moulsham is designed to be purely on aptitude and not musical ability with multiple choice questions, for example, on rhythm recognition and pitch recognition. You can use our Music Aptitude Tests to familiarise yourself with the styles of MAT commonly used by UK State Secondary Schools. We call one of our sections in our training materials “Texture” but we believe this will be very similar in style to the “Harmony” requirements. Do note the schools change the test each year ever so slightly as they are aware there are tutors prepping students for this exam as well as offering resources to help familiarise with the tests. In our experience, any preparation you do will stand you in good stead on test day.
