Thinking ahead to September 2020 Music Scholarship Admissions for UK State Secondary School

2020-Music-Aptitude-Test-Training-Workshops-Free-TestsIf you are a parent of a Year 5 student, you may be getting your research done early and booking onto the current batch of School Open Days for state secondary schools. I had booked to visit a school in South London but was so busy with Music Aptitude Test group workshops that I had to cancel it! My daughter’s in Year 5 and I’m already thinking ahead to the scholarships as she’s going for a Sports Scholarship and I have spent so many years preparing students for Music Scholarships that I have no idea what the sports one entails!

Here’s a few hints and tips when researching secondary school scholarships:

  1. What scholarships are on offer and how many can we enter? Many schools offer Art, Music, Dance, Drama, Sports and Music Scholarships. I understand that most schools allow you to pick two scholarships to try for so it’s definitely worth doubling up! We’re going to try Music and Sports scholarships next year.
  2. Check the deadlines to apply for scholarships. Most schools require you to return the forms in September and then sit the tests within a few weeks. However, there are some schools that have very early deadlines where they see students in May or June in Year 5, well ahead of the Year 6 date to fill in the application form. Don’t be caught out by these advance deadlines!
  3. Prep well in advance. It’s worth trying out the Music Aptitude Tests now as you have a whole year to work on it with your teacher. The sheer number of downloads and enquiries I receive from mid-August onwards shows that the majority of parents leave it until the last month to prepare for the MAT test. Our monthly workshops are heavily booked well in advance but I’m going to schedule some a bit earlier in 2019. Keep an eye out on our Facebook page and Eventbrite page for upcoming events. I’ll also schedule a Parents’ Q&A session at our piano studio in East Dulwich in January or February 2019.
